What is Myofascial Release?
Myofascial (pronounced "my-o-FASH-e-ul") release might sound a little strange but it's a very effective technique. Myofascial pain originates in trigger points based in the fascia, the thin, elastic connective tissue that wraps structures within our bodies like muscles. These points can become stiff and anchored and are sometimes not even located where the source of your pain seems to be coming from, making diagnosis tricky for non-professionals.
John F. Barnes, the internationally recognized therapist and author with 50 years of experience in myofascial release, describes it:
"Trauma, inflammatory responses, and/or surgical procedures create Myofascial restrictions that can produce tensile pressures of approximately 2,000 pounds per square inch on pain sensitive structures that do not show up in many of the standard tests (x-rays, myelograms, CAT scans, electromyography, etc.). Myofascial Release will safely and gently release the entire Myofascial complex for lasting and comprehensive results and authentic healing."
Instead of the temporary relief offered from pain medication, and more effectively than many other traditional therapies, myofascial release treats the problem directly through gentle and sustained pressure - directly on the skin, with no oils, creams, etc., which can cloud detection of the injured areas - into the myofascial connective tissue to eliminate pain and restore motion.
